Activated carbon is used for the removal of impurities from solutions of the active pharmaceutical ingredient or its intermediate by adsorption. Examples are:
- Purification of antibiotics, injection fluids, contrast fluids
- Purification of paracetamol and vitamins.
Activated carbon is added to tablets and capsules for the treatment of gastro-intestinal complaints and hangovers, and is an effective antidote for swallowed poisons.
